New York’s spring art fair season is coming up and we’re here to help you sort through the vast range of art fairs. Read on to discover 10 New York art fairs, listed chronologically from March through May.


1. The Armory Show – 7-10 March 2019

The Armory Show is one of New York City’s most established art fairs for 20th and 21st century art, featuring leading international galleries, innovative artist commissions and dynamic public programs. The first edition of the art fair in 1994, then The Gramercy International Art Fair, simply consisted of artists showing their works in hotel rooms on the top three floors of the Gramercy Hotel. Today, The Armory Show takes place at Piers 92 & 94 on the Hudson River, involving 100 leading contemporary art galleries from around the world.

2. Volta New York – 6-10 March 2019

Volta New York is the smaller and more focused affiliate fair to The Armory Show, presenting established and emerging artists from 37 nations.

3. Art Show (Art Dealers Association of America) – 28 February-3 March 

A week before the Armory Show and Volta New York, the Art Dealers Association of America (ADAA) is hosting its annual Art Show. 72 ADAA members will be exhibiting at the art fair and there will be several panels and events accompanying the fair, like “Collection Management Best Practices” and “Private Collecting for the Public Good,” with panelists like Pamela J. Joyner of The Joyner/Giuffrida Collection and J. Tomilson Hill of the Hill Art Foundation.

4. Scope New York – 7-10 March 2019

Scope aims to forge the way for emerging artists and galleries, and the 19th edition will take place in Metropolitan Pavilion at its Chelsea location. 60 international exhibitors will present contemporary work.

5. Independent – 8-10 March 2019

Independent, which The New York Times called the most cutting edge New York art fair to learn the most about promising new art, will return to Spring Studios in Tribeca this year. This art fair hosts 64 galleries and non-profit institutions, among which are the Brussels/New York gallery C L E A R I N G and Berlin/Cologne gallery Galerie Nagel Draxler.

6. Affordable Art Fair – 28-31 March 2019

Affordable Art Fair’s mission is to make art accessible to everyone. It welcomes local, national and international exhibitors to show original contemporary work from a vast range of contemporary artists, all between $100 – $10,000.

7. Moniker Art Fair – 1-5 May 2019

The aim of Moniker Art Fair is to react against the feed-led, aesthetic-only consumerism of our time with a strong curatorial hand and hand-picked galleries and artists committed to message, technique, and challenging the status quo.

8. The Other Art Fair – 2-5 May 2019

The Other Art Fair was founded in London and has since spread to the US and Australia as well. It was created to help talented artists struggling to find recognition connect with an audience. The Other Art Fair runs every spring and fall at Greenpoint’s Brooklyn Expo Center. The fair showcases 130 independent and emerging artists presented by its partner, online art gallery Saatchi Art, and prices for artworks start at $150.

9. Frieze New York – 2-5 May 2019

The world-renowned Frieze art fair returns to New York in May, showing both exciting emerging artists and iconic names in modern and contemporary art. Aside from the main gallery section, Frieze New York includes the special sections Frame (dedicated to galleries established less than eight years ago) and Spotlight (a section for solo artist shows of 20th century works), advised upon by independent curators.

10. 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair – 3-5 May 2019

1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair is dedicated to showing contemporary art from Africa and the African diaspora. It brings together 24 exhibiting galleries at Industria, a photo studio in the West Village. Participating galleries span 16 countries including Ethiopia, Morocco, Senegal, France, the UK and the US. Among them are MAGNIN-A from Paris; Galerie Cécile Fakhoury from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire and Dakar, Senegal; and AFRONOVA from Johannesburg, South Africa.
