Global Art Market: Master’s Degree in International Contemporary Art Market

Taught in Spanish and English from September 2022 to July 2023, the course examines the diverse players, dynamics and challenges in art world and its market, offering a complete and high-level academic program with a global perspective.

Topics

The program consists of five modules, plus a sixth transversal module on technical English focused on the art market and negotiation strategies and an international training experience in Art Basel Miami and its parallel fairs.

MODULE 1. Art market agents

Contents: Introduction to the history of collecting and gallery management; the key figures in the art world: artists, gallery owners, art dealers, art advisors, art fairs, private collections, corporate collections and foundations, acquisition managers in public and private institutions.

MODULE 2. The professional tools of the art market

Contents: Introduction to marketing; marketing for art and culture; fundraising: public and private sponsorships; relations with brands and private companies; branding; communication and advertising strategies; digital communication; digital sales platforms.

MODULE 3. Economics and Law of Art

Contents: Economics of cultural industries; economic plan of a cultural organization; policies and legal framework of patronage; taxation in the art market; artist’s rights; intellectual property; originality and supports in sculpture; unique works, originals and reproductions; sculptural works in the digital environment; collective management of sculptural works.

MODULE 4. Auction Houses: Authentication, Appraisal and Expert Appraisal

Contents: Auction houses in the national and international panorama; authentication and certification; appraisal and expertise; study of the work of art, inventory, cataloguing, registration and analysis; art conservation and transport.

MODULE 5. New Media, New Formats, New Markets

Contents: New markets: Latin America, Asia, and Middle East; commercialization of new formats; the digital art market; new platforms of diffusion and commercialization; current challenges in the sector.

TRANSVERSAL MODULE. Technical English and negotiation strategies applied to the art market.

Objectives: Learn the specific vocabulary applied to contemporary art and its management; learn legal and business terminology; learn how to draft and review contracts and how to carry on a fluent conversation and negotiation between the different market agents in order to obtain success in any future project.
